- On Track to Save 2026: MSF Run And Orienteering
Since 2002, MSF has organised an annual orienteering competition “On Track to Save” in Hong Kong, inviting the public to embark on a simulated lifesaving journey. Through outdoor orienteering, participants experience the arduous challenges faced by frontline medical teams as they navigate treacherous terrain to reach people in distress. In recent years, the event has evolved to incorporate running elements, rallying wider group of participants to embody the spirit of humanitarian action and race toward the finish line for saving more lives.
Every Second Counts on the Frontlines of Emergency Response
In crisis settings, every second can mean the difference between life and death. With conflicts, natural disasters and scarce resources worsening people’s living conditions, infectious diseases can spread rapidly within hours, overwhelming communities and healthcare systems. Some illnesses deteriorate swiftly and, without timely treatment, can lead to lifelong complications or even death. Now in its 24th year, the event adopts the theme “Every Minute Counts Race to Save Lives”, highlighting three life‑threatening diseases that can become fatal within a short period of time: Cholera, Malaria, and Noma. With decades of humanitarian aid experience and medical expertise, MSF responds with urgency—mobilizing teams and supplies as quickly as possible to launch emergency interventions and provide critical care. Our work goes beyond treating patients; we also focus on outbreak prevention, mental health support, and upholding the dignity of those we work with.
To give participants a deeper understanding of the urgency and complexity of humanitarian response, the venue featured various interactive elements, including booth games, exhibition installations, and a simulated inflatable medical tent showcasing essential medical tools used on the frontline.
On Track To Save 2026: Orienteering Race Relaunched
This year’s event attracted nearly 4,000 participants, offering a diverse range of challenges including 10-kilometer and 3-kilometer running races. Notably, the long-awaited orienteering competition made its return, providing an engaging experience for participants of all ages and skill levels. The orienteering competition included Family, Individual and Team challenges, catering to participants with varied abilities.
The competition spanned across scenic locations from Pak Shek Kok Promenade to Tai Po Road and Cheung Shue Tan Road, where participants showcased physical endurance, navigation skills, and speed to complete demanding tasks. The orienteering event alone drew over 1,000 enthusiastic participants, immersing them in simulated rescue scenarios designed to test their adaptability, teamwork and decision‑making.
Participants undertook 15 unique challenges, including transporting medical supplies and answering questions related to infectious diseases. Through hands-on activities, they gained deeper insights into humanitarian medical work while appreciating the dedication and hardships faced by frontline responders. This meaningful experience not only highlighted the importance of global humanitarian aid but also fostered a greater sense of community and empathy among attendees.
