It is with great sadness that the Barnes family announces the passing of Eric Charles Barnes CBE, GBS — affectionately known as Eckers. He died peacefully in his sleep on 16th September 2025, four days after his 101st birthday.
Born in outback (rural) Queensland, Australia, Eckers’ career as a Magistrate brought him to Hong Kong in 1966, where he became a High Court Judge until his retirement in 1992. He was awarded a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of his service. Eckers subsequently became the Chief Adjudicator of the Immigration Tribunal in Hong Kong until 2004, when he was awarded a Gold Bauhinia Star (GBS).
After losing his wife Fay in 1976, he is now survived by a loving and lively group of descendants in Hong Kong and around the world.
He will be greatly missed by his wife Judi and children Vicki, Greg, John, Peter, Chris, Paul, Jenni and their spouses Michael, Wendy, Audra, Ieva, Ashley and Ben; grandchildren Taryn, Jose, Philip, Christie-Anna, Callum, Tasya, Luke, Maisy, Amelie, Kaius, Estella and step-grandson Danny; their spouses and partners Dan, Deborah, Marian, Alana, Martyn and Richelle; great-grandchildren Patrick, Charlie, Rosie, Emile and step great-grandson Ethan.
We invite those who would like to celebrate Eckers’ life with us to a wake to be held on 10th November, 2025 (Monday) in the Salão Nobre de Camões, 27/F, Club Lusitano.
